The diagnosis changed everything.
When my husband David was told he had six months to live, I became obsessed with one terrifying thought: What if I forget the feeling of his hands in mine?
Those hands had held our newborn daughter. Built our first home together. Reached for me every single night for twenty-two years.
As the treatments made him weaker, I watched his hands change. His wedding ring started slipping. His grip wasn't as strong. I was watching pieces of him disappear, and I felt helpless.
One night, as I was helping him get dressed, he caught me staring at his hands.
"I wish I could keep them forever," I said through tears.
"Then let's find a way," he replied.
David had always been good with his hands—he was a contractor who understood materials. That became our project together. We researched casting compounds, tested different formulas in our garage, and worked to create something that would capture every detail perfectly.
It took us weeks to get it right. The first attempts were too brittle. Others didn't capture enough detail. But David was determined. Even on his worst days, he'd shuffle out to the garage to test another mixture.
When we finally perfected our formula and made our own cast, sitting at our kitchen table with fingers intertwined, I knew we'd created something special. Every line, every detail, every imperfection that made his hands uniquely his—it was all there.
David passed two months later. But I still have his touch, and I have the business we built together.
